The Northern Company is an award winning Norwegian company who harvest and sells seaweed from the North Atlantic Ocean. 

We offer handpicked naturally grown sea vegetables as well as sea vegetables grown on lines. Each supplier harvests and processes in accordance to organic principles and with the highest regard to the balance of the ecosystem.

Our sea vegetables are carefully selected and harvested from the cleanest waters off the coasts of Norway, Iceland and Faroe Islands.

All along the coasts of Norway there is a great variety of seaweeds, many of which are excellent for cooking. Seaweed from the North Atlantic is the new superfood, high in nutrition, vitamins and healthy fatty acids. It is a versatile plant and can be used as an ingredient in everyday dishes as well as in gastronomic spesialities.

The Northern Company harvest their wild  norwegian seaweed in the cold and pristine waters of the Træna archipelago; unique, remote and stunningly beautiful.

There, at the edge of the Artic circle we have established Træna food lab, our platform for innovative food production with wild food from the ocean. Our vision is to explore the unique gastronomic possibilities of norwegian seaweed in combination with the rich variety of local seafood. Our aim is to create a range of local products of highest quality; green and suistanable.

The New Seaweed Cookbook

 

The seaweed cookbook is made in order to inspire people to use sea vegetables in their kitchens and in their everyday cooking. It is a collection of 60 colourful, healthy and delicious plates composed with joy and imagination. All the recipes are easy to adapt to your own way of cooking and they do not demand long preparation.

 

VEGETABLES FROM THE SEA

In the seaweed cookbook we have chosen to concentrate on seavegetables from the north Atlantic, our local seavegetables. They are less known and appreciated than their Asian cousins, but just as delicious, healthy and gratifying to cook with.

In the book you will find recipes for a variety of smaller and bigger dishes that can be combined in many ways. There are recipes for main dishes and sidedishes, for soups, salads, and desserts. You will find vegetarian dishes as well as dishes with seafood and fish. 

 

COOKING TOGETHER FOR THE FUTURE

Since the start in 2010, cooking and inventions of recipes has been an essential work. Inspiriting people to eat differently and making them curious about seavegetables could not be done without a lot of cookingevents, workshops, meetings with other foodenthusiast and a lot of experimentation with seaweed in our kitchens. It is in the process of cooking, that the seavegetables become food. When they start making magic in our pots of soup, stews and concoctions of wonder. With the seaweed cookbook we want to cook for the future; sustainable, healthy, local and above all very tasty.
